As I embark on my journey to become a writer and published author, I have some things to learn along the way. Having always been an avid reader, I prefer books in my hands and on my shelf rather than reading on a tablet or my phone.
With that being said, here are the three books I chose to start with to help me improve my writing skills and my mindset to fight off the imposter syndrome that creeps in every so often.
This is a good time to tell you that the links to the books below (and elsewhere on this site) are affiliate links, and if you purchase through these links I will receive a small commission at no cost to you, which helps support my work.
1. You Are A Writer
I started with this book, well, because when you start out to become a writer you kinda feel like an imposter if you haven’t published anything yet.
In this book, Jeff Goins helps you overcome that self-doubt and imposter syndrome by sharing his own story and how he overcame it to become a best-selling author, and how to be a writer in the 21st century and beyond.
If you are thinking about writing a book and becoming an author, I definitely recommend you read this first!
2. Everybody Writes
I learned of Everybody Writes by Ann Hadley, watching a video about copywriting by Sean Ogle of Location Rebel. He highly recommended this book to improve your writing skills, so I bought it!
I am still in the process of reading and studying it, but so far it is a fun book, easy to read, packed with great info. I’m taking notes and will be implementing what I learn as I go. You can check it out by clicking the button below!
3. Content Rules
Another book by Ann Handley and C.C. Chapman. After I began reading Everybody Writes, enjoying that one, I figured I would get this book, which focuses specifically on creating great content for social media platforms.
As an author, you may not think you need to worry about social media, but you do to promote yourself and your work. That’s where the eyeballs and your readers are, and this book will help you promote yourself!
So there you have it! These are the three books I am using to improve not only my writing skills but mindset as I work to become a published author. Check them out for yourself, I think they will help you as much as they are helping me, and even if you get something else, don’t just read through it and put it on a shelf.
Go back and re-read the book, chapters where you are having trouble, or read it again just to get that boost when you feel like giving up or are having a rough go of it.
