I don’t know about you, but I am overwhelmed and just plain tired of being bombarded with all of the craziness going on in the world right now. COVID, vaccinations, open borders, crime rising, inflation, product shortages, and a government being run like a second-hand circus. I may watch the evening news from time to time, and when I do I can’t help but think “I don’t need to know this.”
The news is full of tragedies, murder, abuse, and all kinds of negative things because negativity draws eyeballs. But what is it doing to us? As tragic as it is that someone got shot, ran over, or died in an accident, and we sympathize with the families and loved ones….we don’t need to see that. What makes one person’s life more newsworthy than another anyway? We can’t go back and keep it from happening, control it, or make it better, and it adds nothing positive or useful to our lives. It sure isn’t uplifting and positive! It stresses us out!
Even those things that do affect us like taxes, unemployment, and the policies of the president and government, are not within our control. I know, some of you are saying that we can make a difference with our vote. Really? Our vote may make an extremely small difference in who gets elected to office, but even if the person we voted for wins, you have absolutely no control of what they do once they get in there! They promise all kinds of things to everyone to get elected and then do what they want after they win.
I don’t want to sound like a pessimist because I’m really not, but everything I just mentioned causes a huge amount of stress in our lives, on top of our day-to-day responsibilities at work, home, and in our own little corner of the world. We are getting stressed out over things we have absolutely no control over and most of which we don’t even need to hear or know.
Why You Shouldn’t Listen
You may not even realize you are stressed from watching the news and being bombarded with all of the negative things going on around us, but you are. Paying attention to all of it sends our bodies on an emotional roller coaster, running the gamut of happy, sad, worried, angry, upset, and maybe occasionally happy, all in the span of one 30 minute newscast. As this happens our bodies respond and release chemicals into the bloodstream.
Stress causes our blood pressure to rise, cortisol is released which causes weight and fat gain, dopamine is released and the brain feels overwhelmed, upset, happy, or depressed, and may even cause us to get addicted to the news or negative media. When the day is over we feel like we ran a marathon and are mentally wiped out. Does any of that make a positive difference in your life, help you reach your goals, or help you create the life you want? No, it does the total opposite! This is why what we choose to listen to and pay attention to is so important. If it’s negative, you have no control over it, and it doesn’t add something positive to your life, then you don’t need to listen to it. Yes, you may still hear it if the TV is on or you overhear someone talking, but you can choose not to listen, pay attention, and give it any of your time and energy.
I used to watch the news every evening, but then it became more politicized, biased, and used as a tool to control public thinking and opinion. I listen or watch once or twice a week to get an overall view of what the news stations say is going on in the world, and then I go online and find the specific things I need to know to improve myself, reach my goals, and create an active and abundant life for my wife and me. If the government makes decisions that affect my day-to-day life, I look for ways to deal with it, work around it, or just flat out go through it.
What I no longer do is stress or obsess over any of the BS to the point my mood, body, or behavior is negatively impacted, and neither should you.
Ignoring most of the media that we are blasted with daily is not an easy thing to do. Whether you are watching TV, listening to the radio, on your computer, or on your phone scrolling through social media, we get ad after ad, story after story, thrown in our face constantly. You have to CHOOSE to ignore it, block it, unsubscribe from it, or delete it and CHOOSE to focus on those things that will lift you up, teach you a new skill, improve your body and mind, and move you one step closer to your goals in life.
Life on this earth is not easy, and it’s not supposed to be. No one is going to give you everything you want out of this life or do the work for you. If you want better health, more income, better relationships, or nicer things, you have to work for it. If you are, then you don’t have time to waste on negative things that don’t affect you and that you cannot control. You, your life, and your goals and dreams have to be important to YOU. You have to choose yourself, because your family, your kids, your employer, your elected officials, or anyone else can do it for you.
Don’t realize this when you’re in your fifties like me, although it is never too late. Worry and focus on you, your family, and your loved ones, not all of the other BS out there.
